Aloha, San Francisco

Yesterday, my friend Rita and I went to check out the 16th Annual San Francisco Aloha Festival over at the Presidio. One of my favorite parts about living in San Francisco is the amazing variety of events and festivals that are offered each year. Although this was my first time going to the Aloha Fest, I've heard that it always gets a really good turnout. Hosted by the Pacific Islanders' Cultural Association, the festival offers live musical and dance entertainment, Pacific-Island-themed merchandise, and delicious Hawaiian food. It's a very family-friendly event and people bring blankets so they can picnic in front of the entertainment stage.

While there, Rita and I made sure to try some Spam Musubi, which is like a giant sushi roll with grilled spam in it. And yes, it is as scrumptious as it sounds! We also bought some Hawaiian Shaved Ice, which is basically a snow cone [only the ice is shaved instead of crushed] in a cup and with the option of getting a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom. What's great about it is that by the time the ice begins to melt, the syrup would have trickled down on top of the vanilla ice cream at the bottom of the cup, turning it into tropical fruit flavored ice cream! Yum! At the festival, you get to choose two flavors from a whole menu of different choices. Rita got rainbow and I got passion fruit and piña colada with vanilla ice cream.

The festival is this weekend, from 10am-5pm and admission is free. So if you're in the city, I recommend you check it out!
