Opera at the Ball Park

After all these years of wanting to go to Opera at the Ball Park and not being able to go, I finally made it last night-- along with 32,000 other people! Opera at the Ball Park has become a San Francisco tradition, drawing thousands of people from all over the Bay Area. It is an annual event in which AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, opens up for a free simulcast (simultaneous broadcast) of whatever opera is playing at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. In other words, there's a live stream of the opera directly onto the ball park's jumbotron.

People can either sit in the stands or bring picnic baskets and blankets to sit on the field. It's perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends. Sports and fine arts don't usually get thrown into the same event, but Opera at the Ball Park shows that opera can still be relevant for people today. Last night's showing of Verdi's Aida was fantastic! Beautiful music, gorgeous costumes, and magnificent sets kept an audience of 32,000 enthralled for a whole three hours. That's quite an achievement.
