Postcard diaries make great personalized souvenirs!

I got this cool tip from Jean, owner of

JHM Stamps & Collectibles

of Napa. She said that after years of traveling, she learned that some souvenirs can actually make it home before you do. For every new city or country she visits, she buys a few postcards. She uses each postcard like a daily diary of her trip, recording all of her travel experiences for each day. She then visits the local post office and sends the postcards to her home address. Sometimes she even takes a picture of the post office and gets the post master to sign her postcards. That way, she can come home to a mailbox full of scrapbook-ready, personalized souvenirs that will remind her of every detail of her trip for years to come. The added bonus of sending the postcards through mail versus keeping them on-hand is the lovely postmark adding quaint authenticity.

I went for a weekend trip to San Diego and decided to try this idea out for myself. One of the highlights of my trip was an excursion to

Coronado

, an idyllic little island just minutes from San Diego. It is known for sandy white beaches, great shopping, and fabulous resorts-- the best of which is the historic

Hotel Del Coronado

. Built in 1888, Hotel Del Coronado has been a playground for the rich and famous, even serving as the setting for

Some Like it Hot

(1959).

I picked up a few postcards at the hotel gift shop, filled them out, and posted them right from the hotel lobby. I posted them the last day of my trip, so I received them just a couple of days after getting home. I love them! I'm definitely going to add on to my collection for all my future travels.
