Today my friends and I participated in San Francisco's 98th annual Bay to the Breakers footrace. According to Wikipedia, it is the longest consecutively run footrace in the world. It runs almost 7.5 miles from downtown near the Embarcadero (the Bay) all the way across the city to The Great Highway (the breakers next to the Pacific Ocean). 62,000 participants came from all over the world to run the race. Some people ran it competitively, while most people just came to party.
People dressed up in crazy costumes and partied their way down the race course, some happily toting beer and boom boxes. True to San Francisco tradition, there were many people who were completely nude. Drunken naked people partying in public-- welcome to San Francisco. Surprisingly, a lot of parents brought their young children to watch. Great parenting skills.
Anyway, my friends and I dressed up as Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. The ones who dressed up as Boy Scouts found real uniforms at a thrift store, but we Girl Scouts just bought green aprons and designed our own patches. I can't tell you how many strangers asked us for Girl Scout cookies.
We werent' as hardcore as some people, so we started the race halfway through. We started in the Panhandle and walked to 36th Ave., for a total of about 3 miles. Everyone was so friendly and crazy. It was awesome!
